Therapy For Self Harm

Hello, my name is Kevin Light. I am a counsellor who has been helping people for over 10 years, working both in person and online.

Self-harm, also known as self-injury, is a common condition where individuals deliberately hurt themselves as a way to cope with emotional distress or psychological pain. It is a growing concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults, though it affects people of all ages. Self-harm is often a misunderstood behaviour, as many assume it is a direct cry for attention. In reality, it can be a silent call for help, an attempt to gain control over overwhelming emotions, or a mechanism to cope with feelings that seem unmanageable.

Self-harm can manifest in various forms, such as cutting, burning, or hitting oneself. These acts are often ways for individuals to express emotions that are difficult to verbalise, such as anger, guilt, frustration, or sadness. Many people who self-harm do not intend to end their lives, but rather use these behaviours to feel relief from their emotional pain or to feel something when they are numb. However, the risk of accidental serious injury or suicide is always present, making it essential that those who self-harm receive professional support.

Seeking professional self harm therapy is a courageous step. Specialised self-harm therapy services provide a safe and supportive space where individuals can explore their feelings and behaviours without fear of judgement. Therapy not only addresses the immediate self-harming behaviour but also focuses on long-term emotional strength, helping individuals build a healthier relationship with themselves.

Our therapy for self harm sessions offer tailored support to address these underlying factors. At Wounded Healer we use a range of therapeutic approaches to help individuals replace harmful behaviours with healthier alternatives.
